History of Chevron Cars Commercials

Ten years ago, Chevron launched the now-famous advertising campaign featuring the lovable claymation Chevron Cars.

The inspiration for creating the car characters ad campaign for Chevron came from an associate creative director at the ad agency Young & Rubicam named Charlie McQuilkin. He had seen a claymation movie called Creature Comforts, and thought the technique would work really well for a new Chevron campaign.

The company partnered with Aardman Animations, the creators of the Creature Comforts film, and produced a number of T.V. commercials over the past ten years.

The hardest part about bringing the car characters to life was finding the right voice to match each car's personality. To find the right voices for the car characters, Americans from across the country were "interviewed" about what it would be like to be a car and why an engine would want to have new Chevron gasolines with Techron. Once the voices were recorded, the artists at Aardman went to work to make the characters and produce the final commercials.

Why don't you make a movie with Chevron Cars instead of Pixar's new movie "Cars" which got me jealous because it wasn't them. I LOVE Chevron Cars pleeaseee!! Raise the bar! Thanks.

Couldn't help but think that the creative genius at Y & R is somehow responsible for Pixar's new movie "Cars". The characters are spitting images of the Chevron gang.

Add me to the "begging for DVD of commercials" petition!

I did contact Chevron some time ago asking for just that but basically only received a "no".

Or would that be "nope"? haha

I have most of the commercials on dvd (and video). It comes from recording a lot of different channels then combing through hours of footage to get them. A number of years ago there was a full length movie called the Festival of Claymation (which is a term created by Will Vinton for HIS process of animating with clay). The feature film in theatres showcased all of their commercials but when it was released on video (pre-dvd days) most of the commercials were not included simply because licensing rights would have forced the video not to be profitable. Since the video was priced at $50-60.00 a tape, it proved not to be successful despite not including the commercials. I was able to get most of the commercials on my own once again through various sources so I almost had a complete "Festival". Some of the commercials that were not included were the Egg campaign (similar to the California Raisins) and Pizza Hut's "Noid" which I have numerous versions of. Nowadays Will Vinton studios have kicked Will Vinton off the board of directors and are just making computer generated commercials (M&M's). Aardman is still plugging away quite successful with the new Wallace & Gromit movie opening in less than two weeks.

I wish I could see all the old chevron car commercials. It's not the same without 'em. It's just not.

Why can't you sell a DVD or a vidio of all te comercials? And tell me who the next new car is and bring back all the other comercials.

I too would like to join the ranks of Chevron Cars fans clamoring for a DVD of the ads. Please Chevron, find a way to make it happen! When in history has anyone begged to see an ad over and over, let alone have their own copy so they can do just that? Talk about your successful advertising campaigns! Maybe we need to start a petition drive to show Chevron just how many people want a DVD of their ads.

it would be cool if you made a chevron cars movie with chevron car commercials for the trailers

TJ, That would be nice, but they don't sell the Chevron Cars commercials on DVD at the Autopia ride at Disneyland. There is no DVD available of the commercials. I think it has to do with licensing that Chevron is not licensed to sell them on DVD.

For those who would like the commercials on DVD, here is a tip. At Disneyland, on the autotopia ride, while your waiting online they play the chevron commericials. Outside of the ride there is a store. Maybe you could get the DVD from that store... Just an idea for if you go to Disneyland and you want the commercials on DVD or Video.

I would love a DVD with all the comercials on it. I wish they were downloadable on the main chevron cars site. Oh and a special car included would be nice as well.

I have enjoyed the commercials (and all things Aardman) for years. I wonder if there is any possibility of collecting the commercials on a DVD? That sounds crazy, but one could judge the demand based upon the number of hits you receive on the Drive-In Theater page. It would certainly be a unique advertizing opportunity, maybe as a package with a special car? Just a thought.
