Maria's Question
A nice note and interesting question recently came in from Maria in San Francisco: "I have been a casual Chevron Cars collector since they were first released; recently, my interest in these adorable cars has been revived. I'm torn between keeping my cars in their cute packaging and taking them out so that I can enjoy the cars themselves fully."
"Would you please post a blog entry asking the community how they enjoy their collections - in our out of the packaging?"
Well, what do you do? Maria and many others would love to hear. Most collection images we receive show cars without the packaging. Is this really the way the majority of your collections are kept? Do tell us!

If you are collecting the cars for enjoyment take them out of the packages if you wish! IF you are collecting hoping that their value will rise in the future, DO NOT open the packages. Try to not even break the seals!

I have every car and I always take them out. I have a shoe shelf and they all are lined up perfectly displayed. They look very neat and organized and they never go unnoticed when I have guests over. Also the shelf is nice and you can keep adding more shelves to it. So when new cars come out I just buy another shelf to put on top of the last one. Lowe's or Home Depot sell these for like $12.00 in the self organizing area. I figure if you keep all of them in the boxes there is a lot more space taken up and unless you plan to sell them take them out. It always makes me smile when I walk by and see all the little cars smiling back at me.

I choose both! Whenever a new car comes out I buy two. One stays in the package and the other one is out for all to play with.
When the grandkids come to visit, they know they might be taking one of the open ones home.

Hi Maria,
We always enjoy the cars out of the box. One fun idea, if you have a stairway at home, you might want the railings covered with glass where you can glue and line up the cars. That will be fun to see.

I STILL HAVE ALL MY CARS IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGES SAVING THEM FOR MY GRAND SON SOON TO BE BORN. I ALSO HAVE THE CARS SCREEN SAVER ON MY COMPUTER AT WORK SO I CAN ENJOY THEN EVERY DAY. I AM 55 YEARS OLD AND HAVE A ALL THE CARS IN MY COLLECTION. EXCITED ABOUT ANY FUTURE CARS.

I have purchased Chevron cars since they first came out. I bought them for my nephew. He still has all of them and still on occasion when no one is looking (he's almost 14) will get them out and play with them. I still play with them with him. I also have purchased most of the collection for my two grandsons. They bought them with them when they came to visit this past summer, and what fun we had. My granddaughter who lives in the same state that I do fell in love with them while playing with her cousins. She is 2 years old. Not one of these cars remains in its packaging and most still look like new. Something about them that the kids know they are fun, but also need to take care of them. Keep making them. We love them.

I take all mine out of their boxes. Much more fun that way.

Though we were sad to see the die-cast models go, as they took up FAR less room, we are always happy to see a new Chevron Car.
If a car has stickers, we might buy another to decorate but then replace it in it's box like in the case of the Ice Cream trucks.
O.K. Collectors, maybe I missed it, but how many of you still have unopened Chevron Car Cookies?!! Ours are in Cary Carrier.

IF YOU ASKED ME I WOULD SAY TAKE THEM OUT OF THEIR PACKAGING. WELL THAT'S ME! I LOVE TO PLAY WITH THEM. IF YOU LIKE TO PLAY WITH STUFF YOU SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT BUT IF YOU LIKE LOOKING AT STUFF AS COLLECTIBLES ON A SHELF THEN YOU SHOULD LEAVE THEM IN. I ALSO LIKE TAKING THEM OUT BECAUSE THEY COME WITH LITTLE BOOKS WITH INFO ABOUT THE CARS.

I usually put them back in their packaging after playing with them.

I AM A LADY OF 62 YEARS OLD. I HAVE ALL THE CARS IN THEIR ORIGINAL BOXES, I JUST DO NOT HAVE THE CAR THEY MADE FOR THE EMPLOYEES ONLY [GOLD DUSTY] I THINK, ALL THE KEY CHAINS, ALL THE PENCILS, ALL THE ACCESSORIES, AND A HAND MADE CHEVRON STATION. I ALSO HAVE A FEW EXTRA CARS OUT OF THE BOXES THAT I GOT FROM A FRIEND WHO NO LONGER WANTED THEM. I LOVE MY COLLECTION AND WOULD NEVER GIVE IT UP. A FRIEND BOUGHT ME THE FIRST 3 ORIGINAL CARS WHEN THEY CAME OUT, THEN IT WENT FROM THERE, TILL NOW. I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE NEXT NEW ONES THAT ARE COMING. THANKS CHEVRON FOR LOVING ALL OF US THIS MUCH.

I am really torn on this question. When I purchased the 1st 3 cars when they first came out, it was because I wanted to display them under my Christmas tree. I like those boxes for that reason as the cars could be removed and repackaged and because they stack better when stored. I like the new "plastic bubble" boxes because they allow the cars to be displayed while keeping dust off of them but are a pain in the neck to remove and repackage repeatedly for displaying at different times of the year (not to mention time-consuming). They don't stack all that well in other storage boxes and I have opened each of them to remove the "drivers license" book contained in most of the regular cars (the Victor E Vans don't have drivers licenses). I would like to remove them from the boxes to enjoy and save space and know that "in the future" the price would be reduced without their packages but that wasn't why I bought them to begin with. I do agree that packaging changes over time and it would be a nice "snapshot" into time if kept and because the images on the boxes are so cute! So, sigh, I still have them in their boxes but not pristine and haven't decided what to do about removing them because I enjoy the graphics. And since I'm a collector of all types of things and kind of running out of space, buying 2 of everything isn't really and option either. Oh well, it's a dilemma for me for sure!

That's a question that made me realize that sometimes I needed to buy two items in order to solve. Not of the whole collection of course, but when I wanted to enjoy both the playing and the display I just bought two of that item.

When I get a new car, it's out of the box as soon as I get in the car!

A few years ago you could go to the Chevron Website and they had the commercials there. I was able to download the ones they had up to that point, now I just need to find where they are stored!
I began buying the Chevron Cars at the beginning for my kids, We have bought a LOT of the cars (1 of each for each kid) plus I have found quite a few at yard sales and rummage sales still in the packages. I think I have bought around 150+ and so now I have multiples of many of them , even the harder to locate ones like Davey, Hope, etc...etc...
Eventually all will come out of their boxes and be played with. After all, what is a truck if you won't throw anything in the back bed ????

Like Austin and others I keep one complete set (less Gold Dusty ) at the ready for the Kids to play with. on an open book case. Another FULL set including the Gold Dusty in a glass curio cabinet case in original packaging well.. the Gold Dusty sits upon the velvet bag. I had to use Ebay to get quite a bit of them in NIB condition. I used the monies I would have spent on tobaco to purchase the collection. (Thats how a Gold Dusty came into my collection)

We have a wonderful collection some by the twos. Most all outside boxes. What is life without joy every day. Sealed in boxes in the basement? They do have eyes you know and smiles. :) Enjoy them I say and when you are ready, send your collection our way. We will love them the most. Can you tell we are car people? Cars small and large are our fun.

The packaging helps to enhance value and keeps them from getting dirty.
It also would be hard for me to exclude the car from it's packing because the packaging seems to compliment the car and its name as well as the advertisement that was shown in and around the time the car was made and released. And yes I agree it would be nice to be able to buy a CD or DVD of all those commercials, they are fun to watch!
- Posted By: 3mpro on May 23, 2008
I'm with the collectors who have their cars out to enjoy. Can't imagine consigning them to storage! I collected them to enjoy, not as an investment for the future. Don't have any plans to part with them in this life.
I'd also like a DVD of all the commercials... when will one be available? Normally, commercials can be insulting to the human spirit. But from the beginning, these have been the best commercials I've seen to date.
- Posted By: Carol on May 22, 2008
I agree with Carolyn that they should make a DVD with all the Chevron Car commercials. I lived in Washington State years ago when the car commercials were shown and I loved them. Now I'm in PA and everyone thinks I'm crazy when I try to tell them how adorable these commercials were. I bought some of the cars when I was out last summer on vacation. Please work on a DVD.

Did I mention that i have an obsession with these cars?

I have an interesting story. I started my collection when I believe I was only 2 years of age. My family bought me Rudy and Tina. I got Freddy later. I had basically abandoned them when I was 4. One day in 2006, in Lake Tahoe, CA, my family was getting gas at a Chevron station. I walked inside to buy gum. Once inside, the clerk was unloading a box of cars with Leslie, Kelly, Hank, Tina, and Maria. I had a sudden flashback and I remembered about Tina, who I used to call "Fritty" because of my weak vocabulary. When I got home in Los Angeles (which was at least a seven hour drive) I darted to an old shoebox to find the three cars, Freddy with a lost spare tire, Tina with a lost mirror and completely dented, and Rudy with small damages. Since that, I've been a dedicated collector and have all the regular edition cars except for Sam. I play with them everyday and check the blog every chance I get.

I have a complete collection including all of the mini key chains and all the related accessory packages. All of them are in the original packages.
With one exception - "Patty Patrol". I bought an extra one when it first came out and gave it to my wife. She was an administrative Police Lt. and kept it on her desk at work. When the driver's door was open the staff knew that she was in the building. When the door was closed, she was out of the building or off work.

I have been buying Chevron Cars as they became available starting with the first one. I had a complete set (minus the one that was not sold commercially) until the Victor E. Van(s) were introduced and were not all offered locally. My cars are still in their original package. I prefer the cardboard boxes that the first three cars came in since they could be opened and re-closed. I photograph my cars and put their pictures on my website.

My wife and kids think I'm crazy. I acquire the new car and then it goes directly into another box. When that box is full, I seal that box shut with duct tape. They are stored down in my basement and are sitting up on boxes just in case there is a leak on the floor. I don't want any damage to them. I would have to say that my collection has rarely seen daylight.
I don't have Gold dusty, U of A Victor and Hawaii Victor. I'll have the vans soon. Gold Dusty situation just erks me. $2500 - gimme a break!
- Posted By: Rex on May 22, 2008
I've got everyone except the van collection and all are still in their packaging. They're on display in my home office. Perhaps they'll have a better value in the future, but in the meantime they look great on top of each of my 8 bookshelves.
- Posted By: Joe on May 22, 2008
I have 2 sets of every car including all of the Victor E. Vans cars. One set is still sealed and the other is the set I get to play with. I am now 7 years of age and when I have children, my play set can be for them. My set in the package will be worth some money down the road, in like 20 years.

My mom gave me my first car on my 16th birthday. Sam Sedan is still alive and well outside his box, now with all of the other Chevron cars I've collected. My excuse for buying all of them was that I'd let my kids play with them. My two girls, 2 and 3 years old, LOVE them, along with many other friends. They sit on them, they play with them, they drive them... and I'm sure they'll be loved by my baby boy too! I'm just waiting for a new car to come out so I can buy another member of the family. I'm kind of a keep-it-in-the-box kind of girl, but I love being able to play with all the cute Chevron cars.
- Posted By: Kim on May 22, 2008
I collect for my grandchildren, so all the cars are out and well loved. We believe in enjoying (touching, playing) the things that we like.
- Posted By: Nicole on May 22, 2008
I know what you mean! I have collected two of each car (at least) so that I can keep one in a package and the other out to play with.
- Posted By: Nehanda on May 22, 2008
Mine have always been out of the box. They are knicked, scuffed and sometimes the doors have to be put back on. I figure at the rate they've been produced, it will take over 100 years for them to become significantly valuable, and the joy on my son's face playing with them all now is worth so much more. We'll pass them down alright, but in the "very loved" condition that they are.
- Posted By: Carrie on May 22, 2008
I have about 35 chevron cars, trucks, vans, etc. I installed two rows of shelves in my home office to display them in their boxes.
But some are just too cute to not play with. So, I buy duplicates and play with them or let my grandkids play with them. That way some get loved and others stay pristine.
I recently found a seller of little Prius cars and bought three - one for my wife [to match her red Prius], one for my display collection, and one for the kids to play with.
While these won't fund any significant portion of my retirement money in 10+ years from now, i will eventually sell them and my Usps/Canada stamp collection to someone who will carry them into the next decades.
- Posted By: edwardOfDallas on May 22, 2008
Mine were in their packages until my first child was born. I figured they looked like they were made well enough to not break, so why not let the kids enjoy them too? 3 kids later they are still as good as new (except the bent stop sign post and the bike wheels that come off), and the kids LOVE playing with them. Even my husband really enjoys them. LOL
- Posted By: Deann on May 22, 2008
I keep mine in the original packaging. It will add to the value down the road.
- Posted By: Chuck on May 22, 2008
We actually own 2 of almost every one. We accomplished this buy buying a used open set in great condition on ebay. So Now we have every one in a box including the key chain mini ones minus the Gold Dusty and a open set.
- Posted By: Kandas on May 22, 2008
I have collected every car, truck, bus, etc. since day one for my 29-year-old son. He has kept them all in the boxes and keeps them out of the reach of his children. I have also purchased more than one of some of the cars and these cars are kept in 5 of the Chevron garages for the kids to take out and play with any time they like. This way, they can play and he can collect!
When is the next car coming out? Thanks.
- Posted By: Deb on May 22, 2008
I have all the cars and keep them displayed in my office outside of their packaging. This way visitors can see how cool they are when the move. However, I keep all the original packaging at home in my garage.
- Posted By: Dana on May 22, 2008
I have built a display case 18 feet long in my garage and have all the Chevron cars in their unsealed packaging displayed on adjustable shelves. For the cabinet size I used clear glass shower doors that easily slide open to take the boxes off the shelf and readjust them when more come in. I have the entire collection (all hermedically sealed still), but am still trying to locate a Gold Dusty to complete my collection. I hope someone someday will Will me One. I've seen them on ebay on occassion but the $1500-$3000 price tag is a bit rich for me.
I can't wait for the next Chevron car to come out.
Thanks,
Jim

I never, never take mine out of the original packaging. I have collected almost every car. The only time I open a box is if I get a duplicate. Then I give them to my grandchildren to play with.
I have my kids give me the cars as gifts for my birthday and Father's Day. That way the kids aren't spending a lot of money on a gift for me and I enjoy collecting and watching them all interact to be sure they don't buy the same cars for me. We read the stories on the boxes and have lots of family fun with the project.
- Posted By: Larry on May 22, 2008
I keep them one in their boxes, and one I play with. I try to keep that box too but it gets lost.

Mine have never been out of the box. As a collector I feel they will be worth more over time.

I love the designs on the packaging and I was torn, at one time, if I should keep the cars in or out of the boxes. But since I have about 40 of the cars I found they took up a lot of room when kept in the packaging. I guess I'm not that serious of a collector since I took them out of the boxes. I'd rather have them to play with and enjoy than to keep them packed away. I look at it this way--life can be short and why have something if you're not going to enjoy it.
I'd like to have something that I could keep my cars in. One idea is a case that could hold several cars and also be transparent. I know that Chevron sold "Garages" that held 6 cars, but I know that they sell out of them. Some sort of case would be nice as it would keep out the dirt/dust yet the cars would be readily accessible.
Have fun with your cars fellow collectors.
How about a dvd with all the Chevron Car commercials? Does one exist? I enjoy watching them.
